Foreign Children in Japanese Schools

It is not compulsory for foreign children to attend school in Japan, but foreigners who wish to enroll their children in Japanese school may do so.
The Japanese school year begins in April, but children can be admitted at any time during the year.
Children who have turned six by the beginning of April are eligible to enroll in any public elementary school as first graders, and grade assignments are made by date of birth rather than academic ability.
